SpillTech® Aluminium Bunding for Secondary Containment
Changes in the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 necessitate a rethink on how to manage secondary containment for hazardous substances.
Prior to the changes for example, secondary containment for a Class 5 hazardous substance required containment of 110% of the largest container for containers over 450L in size. In practice this meant that if you have two 1000L IBC’s, companies only had to contain 1100L.
Under the new regulations, companies would now be required to contain 2000L or 100% of the hazardous substance stored.
This presents some challenges with traditionally accepted forms of secondary containment such as polyethylene pallets. To overcome this, the use of floor bunding, conjunction with containment pallets, is becoming increasingly more common. Bunding located across warehouse entrances is an effective way in which to turn your warehouse, or part thereof, into a secondary containment system (the caution here is that companies need to be certain that hazardous substances stored in a common area are compatible).
High traffic areas, and particularly warehouse entrances where heavy industrial and commercial vehicles operate (forklifts, Class 2 RAV B Doubles, or similar) enter and exit, require a heavy-duty solution. Dalton recommend SpillTech Aluminium Bunding for this type of application.
It’s Long Lasting:
SpillTech Aluminium Floor Bunding offers longevity similar to concrete bunds but at a fraction of the price. It is primarily designed to be highly trafficable. Unlike some other bund designs, where the momentum of the vehicle pushes the bund sideways before it passes over it, this bund has a shallow curve design helping the vehicle move effortlessly over the bund. This ease provides extra longevity to the bund as bolts and sealant are not placed under stress. Grooves are scalloped into the top surface of the bund for additional tyre grip.
It’s Fire Resistant:
The use of aluminium makes this floor bund ideal for flammable liquid containment as it non-magnetic, non-sparking and is fire resistant. This requirement is stated in the Australian Standard 1940-2004 as per the below:
“A spillage containment compound shall be sufficiently impervious to retain spillage and to enable recovery of any such spillage. The compound shall be chemically resistant and fire resistant as far as is necessary to fulfil its locations.”
The length of each piece is 1.2m by 180mm wide with a height of 30mm and includes 4 pre-drilled holes to accommodate 12mm Ø concrete fasteners. The weight is 7kg per length.
